Direct Field

Audio Systems Consulting

DF-04 · Approach

Independent, and paid to say so.

Direct Field sells no equipment and takes no supplier commissions. That is the entire value of an independent assessment — if the answer is that your existing system is fine and needs three hours of setup, there is nothing pulling the recommendation the other way.

Method

A

Listen to the complaint

Someone can't hear the announcements, or the hall is unusable for assemblies. The complaint is the brief, and it's usually more specific than the paperwork suggests.

B

Measure the room

Swept sine measurements at representative listener positions. STI, T30 and direct-to-reverberant ratio, recorded against seat, height and source so the numbers can be repeated later.

C

Say what it means

A written report in language a business manager can act on, with the measurements attached for anyone who wants to check the work.

D

Fix what can be fixed

Usually alignment, gain structure and equalisation rather than hardware. Where new equipment is genuinely needed, the evidence for it is already in the report.
